get_iplayer

Here are my notes for how I use "get_iplayer"....

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

installed with sudo yum install

then chmod the file in /usr/bin/

(chmod +x get_iplayer)

get_iplayer (this lists all TV programs)

get_iplayer --type=radio Tom (searches radio programs with Tom in title)

get_iplayer --get 12864 (download as root the program using PID from search results)
--------------------------------
type: get_iplayer --pid={the web address of your chosen programme} if you want the video in HD then add the command --vmode=flashhd after the web address
or --vmode=flashhigh

get_iplayer --get 296 --vmode=flashhigh

This is the Glasto' highlights..
..................

This is for Linux - Fedora 14 (Kororaa specifically) - these instructions I mean.

Followed the info on

Guess who's back?

hmm.

Well.

My sites got hacked - all of them.

Serves me right for having a weak FTP password.

So here I am - back with lovely old Booger - I mean Blogger.

Came across this today - Volunteer for Sustrans bike charity http://bit.ly/sustransvol

"Sustrans has recently started an exciting new project in Wales called 'Wildlife Champions' that will enable us to audit, preserve and promote biodiversity on the Network and also to involve new groups of people in understanding the natural world around them.

Wildlife Champions monitor wildlife and conduct biodiversity audits on a selected section of the Network. This enables Sustrans to record, improve and promote the diversity of wildlife on walking and cycling routes."

Make CD database labels with Open Office

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/openoffice-creating-free-cd-dvd-database-labels.html

How to use Open Office to get, say, all your CD collection into a database then make some stciky labels to put on your CDs too.

Article from 2007.

Excerpt - "If you're serious about music or DVDs, at some point you cross the threshold of having more than you can keep track of easily. The box full of index cards has served its purpose; it's time to move on to storing information about your CDs and DVDs in a database.

This might seem like more of a pain than you can stand. What's the point of doing a database when you can just type it all into a spreadsheet, for instance? Well, a spreadsheet is a good start but with a database you get a lot more features, including .."

Xbox Kinect

xbox kinect

This post is an experiment.

To see how much traffic comes to this blog by just writing a little post about new up and coming technology for the Xbox. Technology free game control - what I mean is - with a Wii you have a controller. With this you just use your hands. Mad stuff. Only just heard about it.

I just want to write this post then look at my Google account to see how many hits this blog gets after I publish it.

Peace

Getting nVidia working on OpenSUSE 11.2

This guide will be a combination of code and clicks.. if you know what I mean..

1. Open a terminal. Type

su -c 'hwinfo --gfxcard'

This will tell you what sort of card you have

2. Go to

YaST -> Software -> Software Repositories -> Add

Protocol: HTTP
Server Name: : download.nvidia.com
Directory on Server: /opensuse/11.2

Just put nvidia if it asks for the name of the repository..

3. Go to

YaST -> Software -> Software Management

to install the NVIDIA driver. The appropriate NVIDIA packages will be
autoselected, if your card is supported.

4. Install the drivers that come up as highlighted (there were two files for my GeForce MX400).

5. Press Ctrl + Alt +F1

6. Type "su" into a terminal

7. Enter password

8. Type "init 3"

9. Do "su" again plus password

10. Type "sax2 -r"

11. The last command will load a window where you can set the settings for your screen.

12. Save and finish doing settings.

13. Type "exit"

14. Type "init 5"

15. When desktop loads again you can set what you want your system to do - Compiz etc.

Note: I found that Youtube now works great in Fullscreen - used to be choppy.
Note: When I set Desktop Effects at the end of this runthrough I found that my terminal window goes white when I bring it to the front. I disabled all desktop effects to stop this happening.
Note: When I tried the 1-click install method on the OpenSUSE site it destroyed my system. This is my second attempt. Had to completely reinstall OS.

Reference: I got all this from 3 main pages..

1.

Nvidia Installer HOWTO for SUSE LINUX users

Note: I just changed the bits that said 11.1 to 11.2!!!

2. Linux Shortcuts and Commands (the first command!)

3. Configuring Graphics cards (the configuration bit)

Good luck.

PS I have not shut down and restarted my system yet... Let's hope it's all good.
I'm gonna try Chromium BSU next. I know that needs proper drivers.

Note: Good page for configuring Fedora 12 here

4 hour doubstep session

If you go to this link before Wed Sept 16th at 10pm then you will be able to hear a 4 hour dubstep session. After that it will be back to the normal drum'n'bass show with Chrissy Chris

. The link takes you to BBC iPlayer. There's some gnarly dubstep on there.

The track on there by Matta realllly did it for me - fast, warping basslines.

.. for those who always bore me by saying that dubstep is slowedd down drum'n'bass..... in a way dubstep is faster because the basslines are faster - d'n'b needs slow basslines most of the time or if not slow then very clipped and glitchy.. dubstep can have full, warping basslines with double the tempo of your average d'n'b b-line - dubstep is like a bit of a wake up call sometimes after years of d'n'b.

Anyway, here is your link for the page for the dubstep sesh on iPlayer

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00mk7qw/DandB_M1X_with_Crissy_Criss_Virus_Syndicate_Takeover/

If, like me, you use Linux/Ubuntu and you have problems running Flash stuff then do what I did. Search Ubuntu forums to find out how to fix it. I'll post this then find the link in a minute and post it later. Basically, search the forums for Flash, wade through and you'll find an explanation of how you have to UN-install 3 bits of flash-related software using SYnaptic.
